Washington D.C. Eye Care

Are you looking for a top-notch eye care practice where you can receive the very highest level of eye care by an expert eye doctor? If so, you will want to come to our eye care practice, Metropolitan Optical. At our highly-regarded optical practice you will receive expert Washington D.C. eye care and comprehensive eye exams by our highly trained doctor, Dr. Saba Ayalew.

At our Washington D.C. eye care practice we always stress the importance of our patients coming in for regularly-scheduled comprehensive eye exams. It is generally recommended that patients have eye exams every year; our recommendations may be adjusted depending on your current eye health, medical health and age. Once our doctor has had a chance to examine your eyes he will be able to let you know exactly how much time should elapse until your next eye exam. It is very important that patients have periodic eye exams because many eye diseases do not show obvious symptoms in the early stages. However, these same eye diseases can be causing permanent vision damage in the early stages of the disease. For this reason it is very important that patients have their periodic eye exams on a regularly-scheduled basis, ensuring that eye problems can be diagnosed and treated early. For example, if glaucoma is diagnosed and treated while still in its early stages, the patient will not need to suffer vision loss from the disease. However, if the disease is left to go unchecked, permanent vision loss will most likely occur. Unfortunately, vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored

Patients who come to Metropolitan Optical benefit from our thorough and accurate eye exams. During the first part of our eye exam our doctor will check your refractive vision. If it is determined that you have any problems with nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism our doctor will be able to write a lens prescription for you so that you will be able to see clearly and crisply once again. During the course of the eye exam you will be screened for many eye diseases including: cataracts; glaucoma; macular degeneration; retinal tears; diabetic retinopathy; and other problems of the macula, retina, and cornea. If you would like to come into our optical practice for exemplary Washington D.C. eye care, contact us today for an appointment.

Contact lenses in Washington D.C.

Contact lenses offer several advantages over eyeglasses when it comes to vision correction, convenience, and appearance. At Metropolitan Optical, we want you to know that there continue to be advancements in the technology and construction of contacts. The ones being offered today provide better vision and are easier to wear than even the ones from a few years ago. When you come in for our contact lenses in Washington D.C., we ensure not only that you will achieve the best vision that you’re capable of having, but also that they are the right choice for the current state of your eyes. We do this through a contact lens exam prior to fitting you for your lenses.

The basic breakdown of contact lenses is a choice between soft and hard lenses. While hard lenses may take a little more effort to grow accustomed to, sharper and clearer vision are a benefit of them and they are typically the best choice for addressing severe nearsightedness or astigmatism. Soft lenses come in four basic varieties to meet your lifestyle needs: daily wear, extended wear, disposable, and color-changing. But now, there are two great new innovations among our contact lenses in Washington D.C. With 1 Day ACUVUE TrueEye™ lenses, you get a daily disposable that that lets your eyes breathe like never before. And they’re comfortable to wear all day long. And with Bausch & Lomb PureVision multi-focal lenses, correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism with unprecedented efficiency. There has never been a better time to wear contacts.

A contact lens exam is the way that we ensure that your prescription will give you maximum benefit and cause you no fuss, trouble, difficulties, or discomfort. Our optometrist will check your eyelids, conjunctiva, and corneas, including their curvature. These are the parts of your eyes that your contacts will be touching. It’s important to detect any potential issues ahead of fitting you for your lenses. This is just another part of our ongoing commitment to you, our valued patient, that extends far beyond selling you contact lenses in Washington D.C.. Whether you already wear contacts or have never done so before, call us today to schedule a contact lens exam and get started.

All good eye care begins with a yearly eye exam. Just call us and schedule an appointment. This will allow us to determine if you need eyeglasses or contact lenses or if you need to update your current prescription. Equally important, your eyes will be checked for any signs of the most common eye diseases. Your eyes and your vision change with time. How you saw last year might be quite different than how you see now. And because most eye diseases are without symptoms to alert you to their presence in early stages, it is vital to be examined at our Washington D.C. optical store to detect any potential concerns early when they’re more easily treatable. And of course, if you do have any symptoms then you should call us right away for an appointment and not wait for a year to pass. Anything that could be considered unusual, from eye discharge to blurred vision; from eye strain related headaches to loss of vision at any level should always be addressed.

For those who do wear eyeglasses, we have a spectacular array of designer frames to choose from. Ray Ban, Coach, Swissflex, Gucci, Kawasaki, and Modo are a sampling of the names you will recognize. Don’t forget our sunglasses too. They come in handy year round and our Washington D.C. optical store is up on the latest lens technology, including progressive lenses to help you see better at all distances. Contact lenses, from rigid to soft are available. And our dedication to bringing you the most advanced products is evident in 1 Day Acuvue TrueEye™ Brand lenses as well as Bausch & lomb PureVision Multi-focal lenses.

Soft contact lenses are made of flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGPs) are more durable and resistant to deposit buildup, and usually offer crisper, clearer vision. RGP’s tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens since they last longer than soft contact lenses. Although they are easier to handle and less likely to tear, RGP’s are not as comfortable initially as soft contacts and it may take a few weeks to get used to wearing them, compared to several days for soft contacts. Extended wear lenses are usually soft contact lenses made of flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. The length of continuous wear depends on the type of lens and the specialists at our Washington DC optical boutique will evaluate your tolerance for overnight wear. It’s important for the eyes to have a rest without lenses for at least one night following each scheduled removal. Treating and educating our patients for many years, our doctors will explain that some common causes which contribute to a contact lens-related infection include, sleeping in your contact lenses, use of extended-wear lenses, reduced tear exchange under the lens, and environmental issues. Another common cause of infection is poor hygiene, including insufficient maintenance of contact lens cases or reusing contact lens solution. Safe handling, proper storage and cleaning of your lenses are important steps to reduce your risk of a keratitis infection. We are well educated in the fitting, as well as the care, of all types of contact lenses and make sure all our patients know how to get the most out of their choices.
