Most eye exams incorporate the same procedures. Ocular tests range from simple procedures, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using high-powered lenses to examine the internal health of your eyes. First your Washington DC eye exam will test your visual acuity with the typical eye chart. This is where the term 20/20 vision comes into play. 20/20 vision is normal vision, where you do not need a prescription. The term comes from reading the 20 foot line which is standard vision is. Many people cannot read the 10 foot vision line of the eye chart but if they can they are said to have 20/10 vision. 20/40 vision is poor vision. The higher the second number of the fraction, the worse the vision.
The next step of our Washington DC eye exams is putting eye drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils so our optometrist can examine your eye with an ophthalmoscope. This examines the internal structures of the eye. Next our Washington DC optometrist will examine your external eye features such as your cornea. A glaucoma test will be given during our Washington DC eye exam by measuring the pressure inside your eye. Increased pressure may indicate glaucoma. We will refer you to the best glaucoma specialists in the Columbia area to help with treatment along the way. The earlier this disease is found, the easier it is to treat.
If you should have any concerns about your vision, ask our optical staff. More in depth eye exams may be done to make sure your eyesight is good. We want to help your sight throughout your lifetime so you can see better every step of the way.
